/>
Bryony Balen, a Queen Scout Award adventurer, has become the youngest Briton to ski from the edge of the Antarctic landmass at the Hercules Inlet to the Geographic South Pole.

Hostile but beautiful terrain
The team of five adventurers – with a mix of different levels of experience – tackled some of the coldest and most hostile terrain, with inclines of 3,000m, to cover the total 1,135km in just 56 days. Most expeditions of this type allow 60 and plan for 70 days. Temperatures of around minus 12 degrees Celsius where not the only challenges the team had to contend with. They faced whiteout conditions, sastrugi – the sharp ridges caused by snow erosion – and frozen condensation blocking their goggle vision. This is on top of the expected lack of sleep and exhaustion of skiing for eight hours a day while lugging ski sleds full of tents and equipment, plus a 60kg backpack containing food and supplies.

Be prepared
But, as a scout, Bryony knows that preparation is everything. The expedition took a total of three-and-a-half years to plan, including a gap year from her geography studies at Newcastle University: ‘... to focus on a fierce training regime and prepare myself mentally and physically for the challenge ahead.’

Alongside the physical fitness training at her University sports centre, Bryony had to ensure her body’s endurance for the expedition by putting on nearly 20kg. The planning phase also included the calculations for the nutrition needed to feed the team for the total number of days, plus the logistics of packing it all onto their sleds. There was mental motivation to consider, and, as Bryony’s aim was to raise funds for charity, a fundraising partner also had to be found in difficult economic times.

Historic footsteps
Bryony celebrated her 21st birthday while on the expedition. The team also took time out to remember the groundbreaking adventurers whose legendary footsteps they were following. The team paused on 17 January, the date that marked 100 years since Captain Scott’s ill-fated Terra Nova expedition reached the Pole.

Building an adventure
Bryony says the expedition built on her enthusiasm for outdoor activities and personal challenges. She credits its success to her previous experience of teamwork and preparation for other expeditions she has organised as well as the challenges involved in completing her Queen’s Scout Award.
Bryony rightly acknowledges: ‘I think it's safe to say I'll never have a boring life!’

Navigation and Seamanship Course

Suitable for Explorers. The Duchess will be volunteering with beaver scout colonies and cub scout packs close to where she is living.

The Duchess has chosen to volunteer with us because she has been so impressed by the impact that we have on young people and on our communities.

Like many people The Duchess is incredibly busy. What has made it easy for her to volunteer is that we offer a model of volunteering that she can fit around her other duties and obligations.

As an organisation we realised some years ago that we had to be accessible to all potential volunteers; not just those who could commit to regular weekly meetings. All the work we have done to encourage ‘flexible volunteering’ has been to support this.

The involvement of The Duchess is the most wonderful endorsement of the volunteering opportunities that we are able to offer – you must make sure that you seize it.

Over the coming days the news of The Duchess’s involvement in Scouting will be a talking point with other volunteers, with parents, perhaps your friends or family. When you are speaking about the news, make sure you don’t just talk about the news itself, but the different opportunities there are for everyone to volunteer.

As line managers we have a particular responsibility to ensure that it is easy for people to volunteer. We have to explain to our teams the value of thinking differently, and the benefits it can have for us. We have to ensure that our groups and districts have a culture that encourages new people to get involved, and that ‘the way we have always done it’ doesn’t become a barrier to growth.

We all know of volunteers with many years service; volunteers who seem to commit every waking moment to Scouting; volunteers without whom Scouting wouldn’t happen.

Such people are the heartbeat of our Movement and we must value them, but we shouldn’t set the expectation that it is the only way to volunteer with us. The Duchess will be helping out where she can, when she can. We need as many people as possible to do the same and we need to ensure that we make it easy for them to do so.

Wednesday

There is enough interest to go ahead. James Setford reached the finals of the kayaking (Explorers) and Isla Todd (network) had a solid showing, coming home in the middle of the pack of the leaders/network kayaking.

In the sailing, Callum took a different tack from the rest of the fleet in the heats and finals. This gave him a strong lead from the start, and despite breaking his kicker strap on two occasions- managed to bring home victory for the Black Isle based sea scouts.

In the powerboating time trials, the organisers kept the times under the hats over the weekend- only announcing the results at the prize giving. Ewan was delighted to find out he had taken first place (especially as he wanted to try and improve his time over the weekend). Carefully maneouvering the RIB like he was driving his dad's tractor, Ewan took on the slalom, reversing and speed course without incurring penalties.

James and Isla put in a good showing with the kayaking. James gave it his all in the heats, just nosing ahead to take first place. In the final, planned tactics to stay away from the pack didn't quite work out and he was caught in the scrum to round the mark. Both Isla and James came in their own races in the middle of the packs with strong performances.

With support from Georgina and Alex, who came up from studies in Glasgow, Steve (paddles) Setford and the Skipper- the Avoch team did very well and we look forward to bringing a larger team next year.

New Compound

Work continues on the new compound with William Wlsons providing electrical supplies to provide lighting and power. The activity week will take place between Monday 17th and Saturday 22nd October 2011.

The residential event is being offered to Scouts who, for whatever reason, have been unable to attend an extended residential experience. This might be due to lack of adult resource or availability or individuals/Troops who come from communities that are experiencing economic hardship and as a result have been unable to take part in locally arranged activities.

The package would include full indoor accommodation, all activities, full catering and transport to and from a number of central locations. The cost of this week long opportunity is only £40 per person.

At this stage we need to know if you think that there are people in your District who would benefit from this opportunity and if so please let me know by return so that we can consider offering places to those most in need as places are very limited, Please do not contact Lochgoilhead directly,

Please email info@avochseascouts.org.uk if you are interested (speak to yer parents first!) They would then be covered as Chanonry juniors - with parental permission of course.

They would have to bring packed lunches and a contribution to fuel, say £5 each.
Access has been granted to Whiteness so no need for Hondas for ferrying ashore although they would be welcome of course.

More details:

Moray Firth Event
We are looking to provide activities for all of the types of craft that may attend the event, which may mean the participating boats take part in different groups. This will ensure that no matter what boat or jetski you bring you are able to take part fully. This year there will be considerably fewer boats, but the single handers in particular would greatly appreciate if a few sea scouts could give them a hand with their trolleys.

Also, we need some help on the committee boat and wondered whether older Sea Scouts who know how to use a radio would be willing to help please? We need a person to relay messages back to the shore - this could either be back to Bill Anderson who is doing the results, or back to another Sea Scout on the shore who could write it all down for Bill (I'm not sure how good his hearing is, as he is a Senior Citizen). In between radioing, the person on the Committee boat may be asked to write down a few times / boat numbers as boats pass through the gate.

For both of the above tasks, there can be different people on each day, so as not to take up the whole weekend of the volunteers (unless of course they want to help on both days).

I would very much appreciate if you would ask your Sea Scouts if any of them would like to help.

Many thanks
Helen Morgan
CSC Sailing Secretary

If you would like to help email info@avochseascouts.org.uk

Jamboree Webcam

http://webcam.worldscoutjamboree.se/

Jamboree is in full swing

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lwrfwYLSWfc/Tjah8muyvvI/AAAAAAAAADw/rWlTkCkRhcY/s320/Scouts-of-the-world-resized.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5635870046261788402" />
Jamboree activities are now in full flow, as the participants begin to meet fellow Scouts from all over the globe.

Georgia from Devon had breakfast with her Australian neighbours this morning. ‘They've shipped a barbecue over and are cooking everything on it. I had barbequed toast this morning, it was interesting.

'We are also camped next to Scouts from the Netherlands which is great as we are going there on Home Hospitality.’

Jake from Surrey was also undertaking some global socialising: ‘We have some Portuguese Scouts on our sub camp. When they arrived we ran up to the coach and made a tunnel for them all to walk down. It's like we all know each other already.’

As uniforms and clothing are being swapped the participants are truly becoming Scouts of the world.

Challenging but fun
The same applies to the International Service Team volunteers.

Fiona from Hampshire is providing advice and support to young people. ‘Working closely in a team with people from around the world means you can build up a really strong relationship that allows you to learn about another country and make great friendships.’

Thomas from Hereford and Worchester has been busy with the transport logistics team. ‘Everything is going really well. Trying to get 39,000 onto a campsite, especially when many of them don’t speak the same language as you, is certainly a challenge, but good fun too,’ he laughs.

The rain has been a persistent feature today but it hasn’t dampened the spirits of the participants.

Chief Scout at the World Jamboree

Click on the link below to watch Bear Grylls tell us about the opening:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLA39YGUYl8&feature=youtu.be

World Scout Jamboree- Sweden

The Jamboree is underway with our own Ross Slater representing the North of Scotland part of the Uk contigent. Keep up to date with the jamboree happenings:

The entire UK Contingent has safely arrived at the 22nd World Scout Jamboree.

Units are now busily transforming the campsite into a home-from-home for the next ten days.

Scouts from Bedfordshire claimed the title as the first UK unit to set up camp, arriving just after 9am yesterday morning.

One Scout James summed up the thoughts of everyone saying: ‘I got off the coach and was stunned by how big the site was. There are tents and people from every corner of the earth everywhere. It’s an amazing sight.’

Hospitality
The warmth of the welcome from the Swedish hosts was an added bonus, as was the willingness of complete strangers to help pitch a tent. Many were just delighted that the waiting was finally over.

The Norfolk Unit were quick to set a high standard for food. Their Wednesday feast of Swedish meatballs was declared by Explorer Scout Tom to be ‘the best meal I’ve had since I left home.’

However the sight of the first burnt pan of the Jamboree suggested that not every patrol’s effort was of similar quality.

Excitement is now building ahead of tonight’s Opening Ceremony.

Follow the fun
If you’re not going to be in Sweden, you can still experience the Jamboree on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Flickr.

Compound is finished!

Thank you to all who helped build the compound. />
HMS Sutherland will visit her affiliated county of Sutherland from March 24-28, going alongside at Invergordon. Members of the ship’s company will exercise their Freedom of the County of Sutherland in Dornoch on Friday March 25 at 2pm.

Ship will open her gangway to members of the public on Saturday and Sunday (March 26 and 27) from 1pm-4.30pm on both days. The Royal Navy Type 23 frigate, HMS Sutherland – known as the ‘Fighting Clan’ – is preparing to visit her Highland home.
Sutherland will arrive at Invergordon on March 24 for a five-day visit, during which her ship’s company will be involved in a packed programme of activities.

The ship is very proud of her Scottish connections and is particularly honoured to be granted permission to exercise her Freedom of the County of Sutherland.

Her busy schedule kicks off on Thursday with a small lunch party for invited guests, including Lord Strathnaver and the Naval Regional Commander Scotland and Northern Ireland, Commodore Charles Stevenson, who will both have boarded the ship on Wednesday and spent overnight on board.

The lunch will later be followed by a capability demonstration for local and civic dignitaries, which will allow the crew to explain the importance of her role and ability.

On Friday, the ship will get her opportunity to exercise her Freedom of the County of Sutherland – a great honour and one which brings with it tradition and spectacle, as members of the ship’s company take to the streets of Dornoch, bayonets fixed, drums beating and colours flying.

Sutherland’s crew will be joined for the parade by the Royal Marine Band Scotland, on a rare visit to the north of Scotland.

Setting off from Dornoch Police Station at 2pm, the parade will wind through Dornoch, where it is hoped that local residents will gather in support of the ship, culminating at 3pm with a civic reception at Dornoch Social Club for invited guests.
And on Saturday and Sunday, local people can find out more about their very own ship when HMS Sutherland opens her gangway to visitors from 1pm-4.30pm on both days, providing an opportunity to meet the crew and experience life onboard a warship.
In addition to this hectic programme, a number of Sea Cadet units and schools will get the opportunity to tour the ship. The Royal Navy recognised 1st Avoch Sea Scouts will also take to sea with HMS Sutherland on Monday 28th March for the day.

HMS Sutherland has an impressive sporting track record and will once again look to pit her Rugby and Football teams against the strong local teams over the weekend of the visit before the visit culminates in an affiliates at sea day on the Monday.
HMS Sutherland’s Commanding Officer, Commander Roger Readwin, said: “It is highly important to maintain strong links with our affiliated county, and it is a genuine honour to take the opportunity for HMS Sutherland, one of the Royal Navy’s most potent frigates, to visit her affiliated county.

“Never has the Royal Navy been more relevant than now and the chance to demonstrate our capability at a time when we remain at high operational readiness will further affirm our connection with Sutherland. We hope that plenty of local people will come along when the ship is open to see for themselves.

“And we look forward, too, to receiving plenty of support during our Freedom of the County march, which is a huge honour.”

Convener of Highland Council, Councillor Sandy Park, said: “It is an extreme honour, and gives me great pleasure to grant permission to Commanding Officer Readwin and Ship’s Company of HMS Sutherland to exercise their right to the Freedom of Sutherland.

“We extend a warm welcome to HMS Sutherland and Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Band Scotland on this special visit to the Highlands.”

HMS Sutherland is the nominated escort of the Royal Navy’s Flagship, HMS Albion, and is tasked with protecting her if the United Kingdom’s Response Force Task Group is called upon to maintain peace and security. As night drew in and temperatures dropped as low as -5C, Jake, an avid Bear Grylls fan, racked his brains for techniques that he’d seen on the Chief Scout's TV programmes Survivor Man and Man Vs Wild.
He began by building a snow cave to keep himself warm, digging it into an uphill slope to avoid wind-chill. Later he took the decision to try and follow ski trails down the mountain.
Dense forests hampered rescue efforts, but when he was found, around nine hours after initially being reported missing, he was relatively unscathed by his ordeal, suffering only from mild hypothermia.
Survival skills
Bear’s Man Vs Wild series is tremendously popular in the US, and demonstrates survival techniques for a wide variety of challenging environments.
Bear first got involved in Scouting aged eight as a Cub Scout, and he cites these early adventures as part of what set him on the path to his adult success.

Events

Next week (21/1/11), Nick Martin will visit the ship's company with his collection of reptiles and creepy crawlies. Help support Nick and his animal charity and work towards your community badge.

Remember subs are due. £25 should be handed in an envelope, clearly marked with your name. They're also trying to encourage young people to check up on those around them and take a caring role in their community.'As Scouts we believe strongly in encouraging all our Members to play an active and positive role in society. A real example of the big society in action.'When schools were shut during the cold spell in January, Age Concern asked for support delivering supplies for elderly people unable to get to their daycare centres, and two teenage Explorer Scouts went out with the team.'One of the people we visited was just so pleased to see another person', said Matt. 'It's the small things that make a huge difference.'
A decade of supportNESST was formed in 1986 to provide support and services to Scouting events, and has since developed its role to helping other organisations and running annual events for young people. It became part of Nottinghamshire County Council's emergency plan 10 years ago. Mark Spencer, MP for Sherwood, praised the work of Nottinghamshire Scouts, saying, 'This is yet another example of Scouts going above and beyond to do something positive to help other people. I applaud the work of Nottinghamshire Scouts and know that the people in my constituency and Nottinghamshire are truly grateful for their acts of selflessness'.

Emergency Services are calling on people to look out for their neighbours

Emergency Services in the Highlands and Islands are calling on neighbours to look out for each other during the severe weather we are currently experiencing.
Inspector Steve Mardon of Northern Constabulary said: "The severe weather conditions have begun early this winter. Travel conditions remain difficult and we have been experiencing exceptionally low temperatures.
"Together with other Emergency Services and the local authorities, we are urging people to check on their neighbours, particularly older people and those with any mobility problems, or anyone they know who may be stranded in their houses during the severe weather."
Nigel Stafford, British Red Cross said: "Winter has come early again this year and there are many people in the community who are unable to get out to the shops or the doctor. We would encourage people to keep an eye on their neighbours, particularly the elderly or infirm. Some people may have been unable to get out for some days now due to the snow and icy conditions. We all need to look out for each other during the severe weather and make sure those less able than ourselves are not forgotten about, especially in such freezing weather."

Councillor Alasdair Christie, Vice-Chairman of The Highland Council’s Housing and Social Work Committee, added: “The extra work and effort by all our home carers at this time is admirable. This spirit of dedication is shared by staff all over the Highlands. I would like to thank everyone for all their hard work and commitment.
I would also urge friends, families and neighbours to watch out for elderly and vulnerable members of the community, to help them where necessary and not to assume that someone else will look out for them.”

Bag Packing Sunday 12th December

Where: Marks & Spencer
When: Sunday 1100-1500 ish

We did really well with this last year. The eight-minute spectacle took place in a stadium of 60,000, and was watched by an audience of one billion worldwide.

The cast came from all over Scotland, representing all areas of volunteering, and their performance marked the culmination of three weeks rehearsing six days a week, from 9am to 6pm and sometimes even later.

Richard has been involved with Scouting for many years since he first joined the movement as a Beaver Scout. He was given the opportunity to take part in the event as a member of a uniformed youth organisation in Glasgow, and raised travel funds through doing a 10k sponsored run and organising a rag bag collection, with generous donations from the Lottery Fund, local businesses and his own Cub Pack.

‘The reason I got a place was to represent the uniformed organisations of Glasgow, and I have never been so proud to do so!’ said Richard.

Richard learned his stagecraft as part of the Glasgow Gang Show, where he is the longest-running current member, having been in the cast for 14 years. His experience stood him in good stead for the ceremony.

‘Although it’s completely different performing in front of 400 at Gang Show to 60,000 here, you still had a little bit of stage presence and knew how to stand and when to smile.’

And his Scouting background raised some smiles backstage too.

‘I got a bit of stick off the other cast members, as I was always the one that was prepared. If you needed a pen you came to me, if you needed paracetamol you came to me. Even when... you needed loo roll you came to me!’

Glasgow will be the next city to host the Commonwealth games in 2014, and Richard is already excited about the opportunities that the event might bring for Scouts in the area.

‘I really want to be an ambassador for the Scouts to get involved as much as we can. I was delighted to learn on our return flight that the participants of 2010 have been accepted in some capacity for 2014, so I will be there with, I hope, some of the cast of Gang Show and my own Cub Scouts.’

October holidays

No sea scouts for a couple of weeks. Tony's shopping list for Gael Force today is growing (sorry Claire- heh, heh, heh).

Tally ho!

Summer Activity Week

Sunday brought increasingly challenging sailing conditions throughout the morning- no capsizes!

Unfortunately, the wind became too strong in the afternoon and theory became the order of the day. Kayak assessments continued- with our new kayak instructor passing his assessment too. Well done to all.

Powerboat handling with the younger sea scouts is shaping up nicely, with all able to pick up mooring buoys in quite windy conditions.

The weather settled nicely for the BBQ in the evening with some games and ice cream (who says we're tooo old to enjoy ice cream)

Oh, and Kirsty gets donkey of the day award for dropping a radio overboard. Fortunately we found it about 5 hours later when the tide went out. Its a bit soggy.

Summer Activity Week

Day 1 went well with sailing, kayaking and powerboating courses kicking off.

The powerboats travelled to Rosemarkie for a beach landing (and ice cream) at the beach fun day. Seriously cool way of getting there!

Sunday is BBQ night, so after water stuff we'll start cooking. Pick up time will be 2000.

News just in- we'll be camping on Wednesday at Fort George, thanks to The Black Watch.

Nice wellies Niall.
